There Must Be Accountability for U.S. Drone Strikes

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, heralded as the leading authority for drone-strike casualty numbers by the recent report entitled Living Under Drones by Stanford and NYU researchers, reports 178 children have died in Yemen and Pakistan as a result of U.S. drone strikes. War Costs has produced a video and report on the topic.

Please consider joining us in our appeal to leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives to reintroduce H. Res. 819,  which calls for more accountability and transparency for U.S. Drone policy.

Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi,

H. Res. 819 calls for the release of the legal justification of U.S. drone strikes that have killed civilians in targeted areas, as numerous reports have detailed.

Please reintroduce this bill to the House floor this month, as too much of U.S. government's drone policy is kept secret from Congress and the American people.

Article I, Section 8, of our Constitution states “The Congress shall have the Power To provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States;…To declare War.” While the representative body of the people with the duty to deliberate and act on questions of killing within sovereign nations in our name abdicates its responsibility, unrestrained, brutal, criminally negligent, and secret killing is being carried out by the executive branch using unmanned drones. Drone technology makes it possible to kill from the comfort of an arm chair thousands of miles from the target, therefore it is susceptible to terrible abuse even by those with the best of intentions. This situation cries out for thorough study, full disclosure, full deliberation by the people and their Congress, very tight regulation and prohibitions on its use without the express consent and direction of the Congress speaking for the people, as required in our Constitution.

178 CHILD terrorists?!? Drones are a lawless & cowardly way of assassinating ANYONE ANYWHERE with due process of law. Use of drones in Yemen & Pakistan are aggressive acts of war against the people of these sovereign nations. It must stop. CONGRESS: Your job is oversight – Do what we elected you do do! Demand transparency & ACT.

The United States has lost it’s moral compass & any pretense of holding moral high ground.
