There Must Be Accountability for U.S. Drone Strikes

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, heralded as the leading authority for drone-strike casualty numbers by the recent report entitled Living Under Drones by Stanford and NYU researchers, reports 178 children have died in Yemen and Pakistan as a result of U.S. drone strikes. War Costs has produced a video and report on the topic.

Please consider joining us in our appeal to leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives to reintroduce H. Res. 819,  which calls for more accountability and transparency for U.S. Drone policy.

Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi,

H. Res. 819 calls for the release of the legal justification of U.S. drone strikes that have killed civilians in targeted areas, as numerous reports have detailed.

Please reintroduce this bill to the House floor this month, as too much of U.S. government's drone policy is kept secret from Congress and the American people.

End killings with drones. This is barbaric terroristic behavior. Imagine how would we like to never know when we might be bombed from out of nowhere for no reason by some foreign country. It not only causes terror in the population but increases anger and opposition against us and increases those who see what we call terrorists to want to act against us.

Since the US has given up abiding by the rule of law domestically and internationally, the rest of the world has bent more and more toward a culture of social Darwinism. Short-sighted goals often have far-reaching and long-lasting unwanted consequences: consequences that go unacknowledged but are nevertheless very real.

With these “precision” mechanical drone strikes killing civilians in numbers we don’t even count, or even killing so-called “terrorists” with no legal courts or public trials, we can no longer claim any leadership or moral high ground in international relationships. We also open the gates for other nations to do the same with no ethical compunctions.

We still do renditions and kill wantonly around the world with (apparent) impunity. These actions must stop if we are to retain any semblance at all to the nation we say we strive to become, or to demonstrate any true success in our “great experiment of democracy.”

“Thou shalt not kill” -so why do we think we have the right to – perhaps if we put as much effort and money into trying to find ways to live together we could turn our “culture of war” into a “culture of peace”.
