There Must Be Accountability for U.S. Drone Strikes

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism, heralded as the leading authority for drone-strike casualty numbers by the recent report entitled Living Under Drones by Stanford and NYU researchers, reports 178 children have died in Yemen and Pakistan as a result of U.S. drone strikes. War Costs has produced a video and report on the topic.

Please consider joining us in our appeal to leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives to reintroduce H. Res. 819,  which calls for more accountability and transparency for U.S. Drone policy.

Speaker Boehner and Minority Leader Pelosi,

H. Res. 819 calls for the release of the legal justification of U.S. drone strikes that have killed civilians in targeted areas, as numerous reports have detailed.

Please reintroduce this bill to the House floor this month, as too much of U.S. government's drone policy is kept secret from Congress and the American people.

Use of drones is cowardly, arrogant, and an abuse of power.

The role of government is to do the most good for the most people and the environment for the longest time. Our current use of drone strikes does not meet this bar as there is no transparency in how they are used and no way to assess the damage — to innocent civilians, the environment, and our countries’ reputation — so we must consider this a bad use of our governments’ resources until we can prove otherwise. In light of the journalism performed for “War Costs” and other organizations, it would appear that this position is well-founded. Please reintroduce bill H. Res 819.

I support Obama except for this. These children are just as precious as the children of Newtown.

I am very concerned for the precedent US drone attacks are setting and the subsequent lack of concern/coverage by the US media. It’s bad enough to have an all volunteer military with the majority of Americans oblivious to wars waged in our name; let alone the invisible murdering being done by robots. I’m concerned this modern warfare is too easy for the US to engage.

The use of drones for strikes and surveillance is immoral, alienating, abhorrent, irresponsible, inhumane, soulless, obscene, an abomination and just plain evil. I hate to think that we are becoming the bad guys. The ends do not justify the means. The only success that we will realize with drone strikes is in escalating the violence. When and where will it end?
